All students have outdoor recess daily unless inclement weather conditions exist. Parents should dress children appropriately for the weather. In cold weather, children are expected to wear hats and gloves. During snowy weather, recess is frequently held outside and students must wear snow pants and boots if they wish to play beyond the blacktop areas. If the weather is inclement students will have an indoor activity.
Inclement weather is defined by the Board of Education as:
- Temperature is below 15 degrees.
- Heavy new snow of three inches or more.
- Rain, regardless of the amount.
- The temperature, when combined with the wind speed, produce a wind chill below 10 degrees.
In total, students have 30 minutes of unstructured play time. This includes 20 minutes of recess outdoors at lunchtime and a 10-minute recess in the morning or afternoon by classroom. The District does not withhold play time as a disciplinary or punitive action, except when a student’s participation in play time poses an immediate threat to the safety of the student or others.
