Hickory Point News- Women's History Month and Disabilities Awareness Month and Erin's Law
Second Grade Music Concert

Women’s History Month & Disabilities Awareness Month

District 27 will recognize Women’s History Month and Disabilities Awareness Month from March 1-31. We will honor women’s contributions to American history while acknowledging the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities. This is a time to promote understanding, appreciation, and inclusion of all individuals. In addition to recognition displays in the building and morning announcements, students will have access to a menu of short learning options containing read-aloud, books, videos, and interactive activities about these History and Awareness Months that they may choose to complete.

Congratulations to Our Second Grade Students

Wow, what a great show. Thank you to all of our second grade students and teachers. Sweets, Beats, and Savory Treats was a huge success.

Erin’s Law

In compliance with IL State law, a program on child sexual abuse awareness and prevention will be presented to all Hickory Point students on March 19, 2025. These presentations will be led by the Hickory Point Social Worker/Counseling Department.

The program is being scheduled in response to Erin’s Law, a State law requiring that all public schools implement a sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades K-12. For additional information about Erin’s Law, please visit www.erinslaw.org.

The presentations will cover the following topics:

  • Safe touch, unsafe touch, confusing touches
  • Healthy/unhealthy relationships and grooming
  • Good and bad secrets
  • Saying “no” to unwanted touches
  • Safety steps and reporting

The presentations are designed to empower and educate children in a developmentally appropriate, child-friendly manner. If you have questions about the presentations or do not wish your child to participate in this program, please email Dr. Deely (deely.m@nb27.org). A confirmation acknowledgment of your request will be sent.

Professional Learning

Our wonderful Hickory Point teachers are lifelong learners and continuously expand their instructional pedagogy in many ways throughout the school year. In addition, District 27 dedicates three days each school year for teachers to engage in professional learning. On Monday, our Kindergarten and First grade teachers focused on learning about our new reading resource that will be implemented this fall. Our Second grade teachers focused on math and reading responses. In addition, all staff participated in additional training on the school district's state.
