Hickory Point Happenings Week 19

Hickory Point Happenings

Week 19 - January 14, 2019

In this edition:

  • Student success
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences
  • Library updates
  • Bernie’s Book bank coin collection

Dear Parents,

I would like to inform you of an academic initiative. Hickory Point has scheduled a supplemental, thirty-minute academic intervention period into the school day. This time allows teachers to offer additional instruction to students based on their reading, math or social skill levels. Entry into the groups is based on Curriculum Based Measurements (CBM)  and teacher input. During the intervention period, a Hickory Point staff member will instruct your child. As with all flexible instruction groups, students may move from one group to another depending upon periodic, teacher-administered assessments of their academic skills. Typically, student progress is assessed weekly and reviewed every six weeks.

If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher or us.

Sincerely,

Maureen Deely                                   Meggan Buchanan

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Save the Date

Wednesday, February 6  5:00 pm-8:15 pm

Thursday, February 7 1:00-4:00 pm and 5:00-8:15 pm

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to review your child’s educational progress with his/her teachers. Online conference scheduling, through PT Conference Maker, will be available to parents/guardians beginning on January 18 at 10:00 AM and will close on February 1 at 4:00 pm. Parents will receive an email message in January with details for using the system including the login information needed to register for conferences. If you need assistance, please call the Office.

Six Flags Reading

Hopefully, you received the bright yellow Six Flags reading log. We are happy to offer this opportunity to our students for the first time this year. As your student completes the reading goal of six hours or 360 minutes prior to February 6th, please return the reading log. The reading should be for fun rather than a school assignment. The Six Flags ticket should arrive in May. Here is a link to the cover letter and reading log. These winter days are a nice time to cuddle up with a good book.

Northbrook Public Library

There is a winter reading club this month at the Northbrook Public Library. Please follow this link for details about the online sign-up and bingo card prizes. The website also contains great book suggestions for students. Should your family want to email me any photos of reading together, I am adding them to our display in the library.

Happy Reading!

Mrs. Heaser

Coin Collection for Bernie's Book Bank

Hickory Point will be participating in a coin challenge to raise money for Bernie’s Book Bank. 100% of the money collected will go towards the purchase of books for Bernie’s from our February book fair, and Scholastic will match what we raise to donate to their charity All For Books.

Collect that loose change and send it in on the following days:

Pennies on Monday, January 14th

Nickels on Tuesday, January 15th

Dimes on Wednesday, January 16th

Quarters on Thursday, January 17th

Any Coin on Friday, January 18th

The winning class each day will win a copy of the book "Scholastic Book of World Records 2019" for their classroom.
