Library update(final posting)

Dear Families,

It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time for SUMMER BREAK! These last few weeks of school are a great time to plan for your child’s summer reading.

Does your Bulldog have a library card of their own from the Northbrook Public Library? If not, consider making the trip there sooner than later to sign up for one. This can be an exciting and transformative experience in your young reader’s life. The Northbrook Public Library is rich in resources and opportunities.

Please also consider having your child participate in the Northbrook Public Library Summer Reading Program. A structured program can be motivating, rewarding, and fun! Sign-up begins on June 1st, and there is a big kick-off celebration on Sunday, June 5th, from 1-4 pm. I will be sharing more details with the kids next week during library lessons.

Here in the Hickory Point library, book checkout ends on May 20th. Please return books on or before your child’s library day the following week. In Kindergarten, we will end the year with a mini-author study of Chris Van Dusen (which may involve a bit of building). Chris Van Dusen is the well-loved author and illustrator of the If I Built series. First and second graders will have a chance to build a summer reading list of their own at our in-house picnic-style book tasting.”

Here’s to a summer of sun, fun, and never-ending, joyful reading!

Second Grade Reflex Math Open Through July

Math fact fluency refers to the ability to accurately recall the basic facts in multiplication and division, quickly and effortlessly. When children gain automaticity with these facts, they have attained mastery that allows them to remember them without conscious effort or attention. Children who have achieved fluency can devote their working memory to problem-solving and learning new concepts and skills. When a child has not gained fluency, it hinders progress with problem-solving as the child is using the working memory to compute the operation instead. To help support your child’s fluency growth, the district has extended the Reflex Math membership through at least July 31, 2021. Your child will be able to log into his/her account even though the school year has ended. As a parent, you can log in using your child’s information to check on his/her progress. This will help to support your child’s transition to the next grade. If your child has difficulty using the program, please feel free to use flashcards or other online resources.

Field Day

Students will participate in a field day on Friday, May 27 from 12:30-2:30.  There will be a number of engaging and interactive stations that students will rotate through outside. Please apply sunscreen prior to arriving at school if needed. Also, please make sure your child dresses for the weather and brings a water bottle. It’s always a fun day at Hickory Point!
